Detoxification and medicines using during detoxification process


Detoxification process is the first step in most deaddiction centers. In this process, the toxics accumulated inside the person after years of drug or alcohol abuse are removed. During the withdrawal symptoms, the addict may face several physical, medical and psychological issues. To deal with these issues, the medicines are given to the patient or addict. Detoxification is generally a safe process and the patient is monitored during the process by doctors at the rehabilitation center. The detoxification process should be preferred only at the rehabilitation center. The patient or addict should not try it at home. The effect of the detoxification process may vary from patient to patient, but the effect is only during the process. After the process, the patient is generally cured of all toxic substances.  The severity of the detoxification process depends on body composition and metabolism of the addict, the nature of drugs or substances that were used over the years, the period of their use and any other addiction besides them.



Withdrawal symptoms occur because patient has become used to certain substances. When those substances are suddenly stopped, the body of the patient shows certain withdrawal systmptoms   . These symptoms may start immediately after the stopping of the substances. These symptoms range from depression, inability to sleep, to headache, rapid heartbeat, sweating, diarrhea, strokes, hallucination and even heart attack

To deal with these conditions of the patient, the medicine are given to the patient. These medicines depend on the addiction being treated.    The use of these medicines eases the severity of the withdrawal symptoms. The medicines are –

Methadone is often Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Centre used for patients going through detoxification process of heron or opiate drugs. The use of this medicine is reduced over the time to help a person to become completely free of dependence on any drugs. There is possibility that the person may become addictive to new drugs that is why the medicine is given under supervision of a doctor and depends on individual cases.


 Buprenorphine is another medicine used during detoxification process .This medicine does not give high unlike methadone. That is the reason of increase in use of this medicine.  The doses are reduce slowly to make person drug dependence free.


Benzodiazepines are the drugs Deaddiction Centers in Mumbai used to treat anxiety and seizures issues of the patient during detoxification process. They are also used to help patients face depression issues. Barbiturates medicine is also preferred for curbing anxiety and reduces the severity of withdrawal symptoms.
